[Direct] Meanwhile in the paintshop…..

I repainted most of the case. I didn’t want to paint over the existing “direct” labels and other text, but everything else is painted. It came out ok enough, certainly a lot better than it was. To get it really good though, the whole case should have been stripped & sandblasted. Some rusty area’s really started to bubble – you can see it on the left side. I manaeged to get it down enough and with a good layer of primer it came out pretty solid.

Also straigtened everything out that was bent out of shape. I have all fresh new screws, stands, washers and nuts etc so it will look all new 🙂

The frontpanel I only touched up slightly. I don’t want to mess around with that a lot. I just made sure that all exposed aluminium had a coat again.

I did a test fitting, added the new rotary switch caps. These are nearly identical to the originals, but as they are new, they are very bright. Along with the new switches, it gives a very fresh new look.

I’m torn about this though, of the original caps, a few were in  bad condition, in that the cap was missing or started to decompose. But I kinda want to keep using the orignals, so I may just only replace a few of them with new ones, or even only replace the colored cap. OTOH, these fresh colors do look awesome….

But anyway, this is how it looks. The upper right switch cap is lose, becuase that switch is misaligned. A new board with some very slight adjustments in positioning has been made and is underway here, which should solve that issue. These newer switches are also just a hair bigger than the originals and there was little margin to begin with. You can see the blue ones have a gap on top, they will sit a bit higher on the V1.1 board. Should be here in a few days. You can see where the paint was gone. It’s a pretty thick layer and eventhough I wetsanded it, it still shows. I might at some point take it to a pro to see if that can be fixed but I don’t want to have the whole original job redone. You can actually see the remnants of some of the hyroglyphs Vangelis wrote on a tape on there as the ink corroded into the paintjob. I don’t want to remove any of that.
